School of Arts research groups undertaking contemporary music practice, digital performance, and screen media research have been awarded Research Centre status. The Contemporary Music Practice Research Centre explores the interfaces between genres of composition and improvisation, technology and human performance, music and society, movement and sound, and text and music. The Screen Media Research Centre covers many areas of film, television and new media including Documentary; British, European and Hong Kong cinema; Hollywood and American independent cinema; political film; cult cinema; animation and representations of gender and sexuality; and generic territories including horror, science fiction and comedy. The BITLab research group is an innovative collaboration between the School of Arts and the School of Engineering and Design, which focuses on the creative and performative exploration of cutting edge technologies including motion-capture, telematic and 3D screen systems.
