Expansion approximations are considered for the solution of Fredholm integral equations of the second kind, of two-point boundary value problems and of harmonic mixed boundary value problems. In each of these three cases the relation between the expansion approximations and the approximation of a certain integral is investigated. This relation leads to definitions of pointwise and of global "near-best" approxima- tions whose errors are given in terms of the error functional of a "best" quadrature formula.en
