Abstract: The generation of wind energy deliberately becomes a significant part of electrical power generation in developed nations. Factors like fluctuation in natural wind speed and the use of power electronic devices present issues related to power quality performance of wind turbine (WT) applications. Due to the rapid increase of WT installations, it is worth to evaluate the quality of the WTs power injected into the power system. This article gives a review of measurement and aspects of power quality caused by the integrating variable speed WTs to the grid. The addressed power quality problems are the flicker, harmonic distortion, response to voltage dip, active power, reactive power, fault-ride through, and short-circuit current. This paper also focuses on variable speed WT concepts and their systems since power quality depends on the WT type. Finally, the study shows the need for an evaluation process to check power quality aspects of grid-connected wind systems.
