Abstract: In order to establish the identity of design as a profession in Brazil, it is necessary to rescue and trace histories of Brazilian design. Initiated in the 1960s, the process of institutionalisation of design in the country involved some institutions, amongst those the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (FAU USP). Focusing on the latter, this article approaches the teaching of visual communication in Brazil in the 1960s, with the aim to trace its origins and references. This study prioritised the use of primary sources and qualitative analysis; some of the images identified are presented in this article in order illustrate the main features of the teaching methodologies. It has been concluded that the role of professors involved in the teaching of visual communication at FAU USP was determinant to the definition of one of its main features: the dichotomy between objective and subjective approaches to the teaching visual communication.
