The UK energy policy is designed based on the so-called ‘energy trilemma’ consisting of sustainability, security and affordability. This chapter will predominantly focus on affordability, minimisation of the cost of energy to consumers, and other measures implemented in the UK to support consumers. Due to high wholesale energy prices, mainly driven by rising international gas prices, have swelled significant pressure on consumer energy bills making the cost of living a real challenge, especially for vulnerable consumers. Specifically, this chapter will discuss price caps on the cost per unit of energy that are currently in force. It will also review other support measures available to ensure that consumers in vulnerable situations are treated fairly. The chapter will also cover historical development of the UK energy sector, consumer protection, consumer rights in the energy sector and finally, the most recent Government initiatives.-
