Für Žižek repräsentiert der Todestrieb nicht die biologische Auflösung eines Organismus’ und dessen Zurücksinken in die anorganische Natur. Vielmehr steht das Konzept für eine unheimliche Lebenskraft, die eine Form der Unsterblichkeit symbolisiert und ihre Quellen u. a. in den symbolischen Ordnungen der menschlichen Kultur hat.
