Abstract: The Tories’ victory, albeit a narrow one, in the Uxbridge by-election in June 2023 gave their climate-sceptic MPs a golden opportunity to pressure the government to water down its net zero policies. What their campaign has demonstrated is the very considerable overlap between Tory Brexiters and climate sceptics, both in terms of the MPs involved and the ideas which motivate them. Similarly, those newspapers which clamoured for Brexit have been equally determined to demand that the government weakens its climate policies
